Tavion Rogers: From the Football Fields of Pennsylvania to the Rugby Pitches of Seattle
Seattle has always been known for its coffee, its rain, and its innovative spirit. But in recent years, there’s been a growing buzz around a different kind of Seattle story: the city's burgeoning rugby scene. At the heart of this surge is the Seattle Rugby Club, a team that not only embodies the spirit of the sport but fosters a sense of community like no other. Among its ranks is Tavion Rogers, a rising star with a story that exemplifies the club’s commitment to growth, camaraderie, and pushing beyond one’s boundaries.
Tavion, originally from Philadelphia, found his love for sports early on. Football, for him, was a calling. But life's paths aren’t always linear. "I had just recently finished my college football playing career and felt like I needed to transition into another athletic activity," he shared. An unexpected opportunity with a rugby club back in Pennsylvania turned his attention to a sport he had barely given thought to. But as with many things in life, sometimes all you need is a taste.
Rogers’ journey from football to rugby wasn’t without its challenges. The habits and techniques from years on the football field occasionally acted as a barrier in his new endeavor. "My football background helped me in the physical aspects of rugby," Tavion says, "However there have been challenges as I've had to break some old habits I’ve developed through football."
Upon joining the Seattle Rugby Club mid-season, Tavion found himself in uncharted territory. "I was definitely nervous when I first joined Seattle Rugby Club because I was so new to the game." Yet, it was the welcoming nature of the club that made all the difference. From the intricate rules to the plays, Tavion found mentors in players like Matthew Hannon and Kellen Gordon, who guided him every step of the way.
His rapid growth in the sport was highlighted during a game against Pacific Pride. Despite being a rookie, Tavion was named a starter, a testament to his dedication and the club's faith in his potential. "Playing hard and giving all of your effort will cause good things to happen," he recalls from the experience.
Seattle Rugby Club, however, is more than just about the game. The camaraderie between players, the bond they share with opponents, and the rituals they partake in make it a family. "Growing up around sports I’ve always valued being a part of a team. I’m glad that tradition is strong with this club," says Tavion.
As for the future, Tavion sees himself growing with the Seattle Rugby Club, both as a player and as a member of its tight-knit community. He's a beacon for those hesitant about trying something new, advocating the spirit of learning and bonding that rugby brings.
For those outside the rugby circle, Tavion’s story is an invitation to engage with a sport that has given so much to its players and fans alike. It resonates with the broader goals and values of the Seattle Rugby Club - to spread passion for rugby and cultivate a community of support and camaraderie.
In Tavion Rogers, Seattle Rugby Club hasn’t just found a promising player. They’ve discovered a symbol of what the sport and club represent: resilience, community, and the beautiful unpredictability of where life might take you next.
